Depression and
Mood Disorders
Depression and other mood disorders (e.g., bipolar disorder,
dysthymic disorder) affect roughly 20% of the U.S. population
at some point in an individual's life. Depression is a disease
that not only lowers a person's mood, but also effects energy
level, sleep, concentration, enjoyment of activities as well
as physical health.
Depression is a serious illness that not only robs a person's
enjoyment of life but also puts their physical health at risk.
Untreated depression is associated with increased risk of
heart disease, diabetes and worsens the course of just about
any disease an individual may have. Unfortunately, depression
is also severely under treated.
The best estimates are that 50% of people with depression go
untreated and of the people with depression that do receive
treatment, a staggering 60% do not get adequate treatment.
However, when treated under the guidance of a qualified
physician, depression is a very treatable illness.
