Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can cause people to severely overeat, or to intentionally not eat enough food as needed to stay healthy. These disorders can also make someone become extremely concerned with their body shape, or weight.

 

The most common eating disorders include:

  • Anorexia nervosa: becoming thin, but not eating enough because the person still believes that they're "fat."

  • Bulimia nervosa: eating too much, but then "purging" by taking laxatives or making oneself "throw up."

  • Binge eating: excessive overeating

Bulimia Symptoms or Warning Signs may Include:

  • Excessive worrying about being overweight

  • Overeating whenever stressed

  • Dieting followed by overeating binges

  • Noticeably absent after a meal

  • Feelings of depression or loss of control

  • Frequent taking of laxatives

  • Irregular menstrual cycles (especially teens/young women)

  • Constant exercising

  • Frequent sore throat issues (from stomach acids in vomit)

  • Fast tooth decay (from stomach  acids in vomit)

  • Extreme dehydration

Anorexia Symptoms or Warning Signs may Include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles, or no periods at all

  • Hair, nails and bones become more brittle

  • Dry skin, possibly with a yellow tint

  • Severe constipation

  • Lowered blood pressure and pulse rate

  • Constantly feeling cold

  • Depression

  • Lack of energy

Bing Eating Symptoms or Warning Signs may Include:

  • Eating larger amounts of food than usual

  • Eating when not hungry, or already full

  • Eating rapidly with little control over it

  • Often eating alone

  • Feeling upset or sad after uncontrolled eating

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, depression or anger

  • Feeling of helplessness about eating habits

  • Weight gain and obesity

  • Trying different diets without losing weight

  • Losing weight but quickly putting it back on

  • Using food to cope with negative feelings
