Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD is a disorder that can occur in someone who has directly
or indirectly witnessed or been part of a traumatic event.
Those events may have been related to war, acts of terrorism,
physical assaults, rape, accidents, or natural disasters.
Although the term is often used when discussing combat
veterans, it can affect men and women from all walks of life.
Symptoms of
PTSD may include any of the following:
-
Repeat unwanted
memories and flashbacks of the event
-
Fear or
difficulty trusting other people
-
Negative
feelings about oneself (shame, guilt, anger)
-
Intentionally
avoiding things that may remind someone of the event
-
Angry outbursts
or self-destructive behavior
-
Exaggerated
responses to loud noises or being touched
